Melissa Sarmiento

I am currently a Detective with the Jersey City Police Department. Before I was appointed Detective in December 2018, I served as the Community Relations Officer for the North District. I have over 20 years of experience working within many different departments within the Jersey City Police Department. I am a mother of two amazing girls; Gianna, who is 23 and Kylie, is eight years old.

I am the President of a Community-Based Program called Young Women of Excellence in Jersey City and with the assistance of nine other officers, we mentor over 150 young women through talks, events, activities, and community advocacy. Other programs that have filtered through my community relations experience are Dear Summer Back To School, where we provided school supplies and book bags to over 900 kids; National Night Out, which benefits the community through donations; M.A.R.C.C. Pen Pal Project, a program that lets police officers and youth in behavior disorder programs write letters to officers so that they can get to know each other on a personal level. Shop With A Hero and Shop With A Cop, which provided 300 kids with gift cards to go shopping at Target alongside our heroes; Started the annual Trunk Or Treat In Jersey City, which provided the inner city youth a safe environment to go trick or treating with their families; Charity Brawl Boxing Event which provided suicide awareness to First Responders, and I currently hold the position of President for the Jersey City Puerto Rican Day Parade.
